Outrage and Debate in Wake of Government Scandal

With pump prices exceeding $4 again in the wake of Hurricane Ike and a debate about offshore drilling roiling in Congress, the last thing the beleaguered energy industry needed was the taint of scandal. But that is exactly what transpired in September when a governmental inspector general’s report described a “culture of substance abuse and promiscuity” at the Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service’s royalty collection office in Denver, where 13 current and former employees are accused of a range of indiscretions from soliciting sex and drugs to taking bribes offered by oil company representatives.
